About Amanjiwo
Named ‘peaceful soul’, Amanjiwo rests within a natural amphitheatre at the foot of the Menoreh Hills, overlooking the UNESCO-listed Borobudur, the world’s largest and most celebrated Buddhist monument. The resort offers captivating views of the mystical stupas of Borobudur. Surrounded by terraced rice fields, coconut, clove and citrus groves, and bordered by gentle mountain streams, the resort feels deeply embedded in its landscape. This is Central Java at its most evocative, where nature, history and spirituality exist in quiet harmony.
From its elevated vantage point, Amanjiwo unfolds with deliberate symmetry, its architecture drawing directly from the cultural and spiritual heritage of the region. At its heart stands a circular rotunda crowned by a domed roof, subtly echoing the form and geometry of Borobudur. Crafted from local blush-beige paras stone and framed by elegant colonnades, the space opens onto sweeping views across the Kedu Plain towards distant volcanic peaks, including Mount Sumbing. The arrival experience is carefully choreographed, moving from the porte cochère through the library, gallery and bar, before revealing the full panorama beyond.
The resort comprises just 33 free-standing suites, arranged across two graceful semi-circular terraces that follow the natural contours of the hillside. It can comfortably accommodate up to 68 people with double occupancy. This intimate scale reinforces a sense of privacy and exclusivity. At the same time, pathways weave through landscaped gardens to connect each suite with the main facilities. Every suite is oriented to capture uninterrupted views across the plains, whether towards Borobudur, the surrounding valley or the Menoreh Hills. Below the lower crescent, a 40-metre emerald-hued infinity pool sits quietly within the landscape, accompanied by a relaxed pool terrace that looks out over rice paddies and banyan trees.
The presence of Borobudur is both visual and atmospheric. It emerges through morning mist or glows softly at sunset, creating a constant yet understated connection to the region’s spiritual heart. With carefully managed and privileged access, guests are able to experience the temple more intimately and reflectively, often at quieter times of day, allowing for a deeper appreciation of its scale, symbolism and enduring significance.
Beyond the resort, Amanjiwo offers access to one of Indonesia’s richest cultural regions. Central Java is widely regarded as the birthplace of many traditions that define the country today, and this heritage is revealed through ancient temples, village life and artistic practices dating back to the 8th and 9th centuries. With knowledgeable drivers and resident experts guiding each journey, experiences feel considered and immersive, whether exploring nearby temple complexes, visiting local communities or venturing into the surrounding hills and volcanic landscapes.
Despite being just a 90-minute drive from Yogyakarta, Amanjiwo feels entirely removed from the pace of modern life. Days unfold gently, guided by light, landscape and quiet ritual, creating a sense of stillness that lingers throughout the stay. It is a place not only to see, but to feel and reflect, where each moment is anchored by a deep connection to its setting.
Weddings at Amanjiwo are shaped by both intimacy and setting. With just 31 suites, the resort lends itself naturally to exclusive celebrations, including full buyouts for up to 130 guests. Ceremonies beneath the rotunda carry a quiet sense of significance, framed by sweeping views towards Borobudur, while more private gatherings within the Dalem Jiwo Suite offer a secluded, residential-style experience. The scale remains intentionally considered, allowing each celebration to feel personal, immersive and deeply connected to the surrounding landscape.
